Robotic sewing...

So guess who found some awesome robot fabric in the charity shop?  I had a plan to make it into a dress but then I changed my mind and made a skirt, and there was enough fabric left to make a top, so now my summer clothes are adorned with multi coloured robots.  Woohoo!

The skirt was made from a dress pattern - it's just two squares gathered up and sewn to the waistband, with a side zip.  I really wanted to put a pocket in but my tolerance for sewing is really short and I already had to take in the waistband so I decided to leave it.  (It seems every time I measure my waist before sewing it mysteriously changes size by the time I've put everything together.  Faff.)
And here's the top!  It was actually made first, since I cut out the skirt then realized I didn't have a zip the right size.  Yeah that's my typical approach to sewing, gather and cut everything at various intervals...
I made the pattern by cutting round and existing top then finishing the neckline and sleeves with bias binding, which I found very theraputic to make and sew together.  I think I'll just make everything that way now, since my track record with waistbands and such is not great...
I had to do it - here's the top and skirt together!  I really thought this would look ridiculous but it kinda works... that's my summer wardrobe sorted then.

(grey top is from New Look Tall, red shorts are vintage and the wedges are Topshop)

  4. Gorgeous fabric, I love both the items together. I've never made a dress but I imagine doing the top and skirt separate was easier and now theirs many more possibilities to wear it xxx
